Feed you car or feed your belly... the Ethanol gold rush
Fact: Iowa is the nation's leader in Corn harvest.
Fact: One typical car, running for one typical year on ethanol will use the amount of corn that would feed 26 typical people for that year.
Fact: If every Ethanol distillery either approved or under construction in Iowa expects to run at full capacity, they would have to purchase Iowa's ENTIRE corn crop for the year.
Source: Economist Lester Brown, founder of the Earth Policy Insitute, in a new book, the name of which escapes me at this very moment in time.
On a similar note: Brazil is the world leader in Sugar exports. They are also the largest country to claim 100% self-sufficiency with regard to oil consumption. They use ethanol derived from distilled sugar cane. Over the last 2 years, world wholesale sugar prices have doubled as a result of the pinched supply/demand chain with regard to sugar cane.
While these examples are great for changing the world paradigm with regard to "foreign oil," there are BETTER ways.
Wind
Electricity
Distilled products that AREN'T food products - trees, switchgrass (which in Utah is a "native plant" read: WEED), etc.
I'm just sayin.
